NEVER GIVE UP!

It has been a tough road to the top of the Hertz FIM Trial2 World Championship for British rider Toby Martyn (TRRS), though his incredible fortitude and never-say-die attitude finally paid dividends this season.

In his fifth year in the Trial2 class the twenty-one-year-old emerged on top following a hard-fought campaign that saw him go toe-to-toe with compatriot Jack Peace (Sherco) in the early stages before a run of four podium finishes at the final four rounds put the championship beyond doubt.

A heart-breaking second in 2018 after missing out on the title on a tie-break, Martyn was still a contender the following year, but had to wait until 2020 to win another round with his sole victory coming at the season-ending Italian TrialGP.

This win ensured he went into the winter full of confidence and he and Peace slugged it out in the early rounds this year, exchanging wins and runner-up positions. A disappointing sixth on day two at the Andorran TrialGP could have ended his challenge, but Martyn drew on all his hard-won experience and regrouped, winning the following weekend in France with an incredible score of zero before ending the year with a run of three third-placed finishes that gave him the title by a comfortable fourteen points.

A move to TrialGP now beckons for Martyn who is buoyed on by the performance this year of Italy’s Matteo Grattarola (Beta) who finished fourth in the premier class following his upgrade from Trial2 after taking the title in 2020.
